OOC: Application 2.0 (Boomtown)
Feb. 28th, 2015 02:26 pmPlayer's Name: Ros
Characters Played Here: Chase, Bucky, Rex. Swapping out Ares, because I can't get a handle on him.
Character: Wichita
Series/Canon: Zombieland
From When? Shortly after the film
Previous Game(s): N/A
World Description: N/A
History: Given how elusive Wichita tends to be, nothing is really known about her past. She likely had a fairly normal childhood, since she describes her 8th grade year as being the year of her first kiss, her first R-rated movie, and her first fake tattoo. At some point, however, her parents left the picture, leaving her and her sister with nobody but each other. In order to get by, they took to running cons on people, with the goal of getting to California. Unfortunately, the zombie apocalypse happened, turning the world to shit and interrupting their California plans. Still, having had no attachments but each other, it was easy for them to adapt to the new way of things and get by-- still running cons on people for weapons, ammunition and vehicles.
And then the movie happened.
Boomtown Updates: Right before heading to Pacific Playland with Little Rock in tow, Wichita made a deal with Eli to come to New Dodge. She stayed in the town for about four months and got to experience such wonders as Rex taking the town hostage (for which she was nanomited) and Mae's house going haunted (which nearly ended in her death). Other than that, Wichita did all right in New Dodge, working as a bartender at the saloon and making friends. She was hoping to scout out a new life for her and Little Rock, but fluxed out before her contract was up.
AND THEN SHE FLUXED IN AGAIN. She attempted to make another life for herself here, and it helped that her sister eventually fluxed in, too. Wichita made friends with other zombie apocalypse survivors, and she had a budding relationship with Kit Walker. Also, she worked the arcade and movie theatre for a while, eventually becoming assistant manager, I THINK? And then she fluxed out. AGAIN. Life is super inconvenient for her.
Personality: Wichita is aloof and stand-offish. She doesn't open up easily, and she generally believes it's better to run away before making the mistake of trusting someone. With her sister, her one rule is "Trust no one, just you and me." As such, Wichita makes an effort not to get attached to people. She's got a cutthroat attitude. Even before zombies decimated the population, she was running cons on people to survive. Still, even though she manipulates people to get by, Wichita's not necessarily a bad person at heart. She's not out to hurt people, so much as she's trying to survive and avoid being hurt, herself. The only people that matter to her are her and her sister.
Wichita's life before and after the zombie apocalypse wasn't all that different. It's implied that she and her sister were on the road a lot, with no attachments other than each other, conning men who were easy marks. She's clever, quick-witted and resourceful, two characteristics that helped her survive before and after the zombies appeared. She's good at playing the part of the doe-eyed damsel in distress, gaining sympathy and making herself out to be as nonthreatening as possible while playing her marks like fiddles. As such, she adapted very well to the apocalypse, her cutthroat attitude helping her and her sister get by without much change to their routine of finding and exploiting suckers. Above all, Wichita is a survivor by nature, and that's how she's made it this far doing what she does.
When she isn't acting the part of helpless damsel, Wichita tends to have a prickly demeanor. When Wichita first meets Columbus and Tallahassee, she's dry and sarcastic, and she gives back as good as she gets. At first, she even doesn't want to hear anything from the two of them, insisting that they all play "the quiet game" while she drives. Further, she doesn't hesitate to pull her guns on them, and she tells them that it's better they make the mistake of trusting her rather than the other way around, indicating that, well, she's got Trust Issues. Speaking of Trust Issues, Wichita has loads of them, to the point where it's noticeable to Columbus really early into their... 'road trip' together. It's difficult to say where they came from; maybe she could never rely on anybody but herself throughout her life, and so it's simply ingrained in her nature. Eventually, though, she does soften her demeanor and open up to Columbus... before those Trust Issues strike again. Once her near-kiss with Columbus is interrupted, she quickly backtracks and reiterates that she's going to do whatever it takes to survive with Little Rock. The next morning, she runs away with her sister again. The survival of her and her sister is the most important thing to her, and as far as she's concerned, other people are just a distraction.
The most important person in Wichita's life is her sister, Little Rock. It's pretty clear that their parents are out of the picture, either before the zombies or after, and that makes Wichita her sister's primary caretaker. This is a role that she takes very seriously, and she will do anything to ensure her survival and-- more than that-- her happiness. Even though she knows the idea of Pacific Playland as a zombie-free haven is just a silly fantasy, she encourages her sister to believe in it in order to give her something to hope for. There are scant opportunities for her sister to be a kid again, and so she invents one for her sister's sake. It's a careless mistake to make, since their trip to Pacific Playland only draws a massive horde of zombies to them, but to Wichita, it's worth it just to see her sister smile and have fun again. Wichita isn't always the best influence on Little Rock, as she takes her along on her cons, but it's clear that she loves her and thinks that she's giving her the tools necessary to survive in a tough world.
Although she's got her baggage and her trust issues, they don't always define her. Once Wichita starts to let her guard down, she's shown to be a fairly easygoing person. By the time they reach Bill Murray's house, Wichita's established an easy banter with the guys, even Tallahassee, with whom she has a slightly more antagonistic relationship with, possibly given their similarly bristly demeanors. She's shown to be cheerful and relaxed when they finally meet Bill, playing along with the guys as they pretend to be Ghostbusters, and smoking some of the good stuff with Bill and Tallahassee. Despite her guarded nature, she's capable of opening up after some time, as demonstrated by when she tells Columbus about her life circa 1997 (first R-rated movie, first fake tattoo, first kiss)-- however, this is, of course, eventually ruined by her trust issues striking back and making her run away. Still, Wichita tends to speak her mind, telling Columbus she thinks he's cute, despite having the guts of a guppy. Overall, she's an assertive person, whether she's brusquely or playfully so.
Wichita doesn't always display a lot of tact, and sometimes she doesn't think before she speaks. Despite the fact that Columbus is looking for his family in the city from which he draws his name, she tells him that they're "playing the quiet game" there because the city burnt to the ground, without a care for his feelings. However, once she realizes her mistake, she's quick to apologize. She's not actively trying to be a hurtful person, but sometimes it just happens. It's hard to say what kind of a life she lived before Zombieland, because very little is known about her, but it's clear that, at the very least, she's adapted into a hard person as a defense mechanism. There's a wall around Wichita that conceals a person who can, surprisingly, be quite warm, as evidenced by her blossoming relationship with Columbus. By the end of the film, she's even willing to tell him her name, revealing that she's fully let down her shields and is ready to let him in.
Although she doesn't exactly want to be in New Dodge-- as she doesn't want to leave her sister behind-- Wichita will be, in a way, relieved when she returns. By now, she's spent more time in New Dodge than in Zombieland, so her ties are stronger here. Really, if not for Little Rock, she'd be all about staying forever. Many of her friends may have fluxed out, but she's allowed herself to grow close to Kit, and New Dodge is, in a weird way, home. Likely, she'll try to pick up where she left off and get her life back on track.
Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters? N/A
Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Wichita's fluxing back in, although there was a time when she took Eli's offer specifically so she could scout out a non-zombie infested world for her sister to grow up in and be a kid again. Although she started off aloof, Wichita eventually came to relax and open up in New Dodge, and there's no reason she wouldn't again. In addition to picking up her CR where she left off, I could see her befriending some of the tougher ladies in town, like Ava or Eda, and expanding her circle from there. She gives me the opportunity for a different type of CR than my dude characters, which I'd like to take advantage of by reaching people that Chase/Rex/Bucky don't have CR with. As a survivor, she's quick to adapt and will be able to take what New Dodge throws at her fairly easily, as she already has in crises past.
What will your character do for work? She'll resume working in the saloon if Kit'll have her back.

Third-Person Sample: The first thing Wichita did after getting out of C&P was find the bathhouse. Now, some people had a problem with the bathhouse. Not enough privacy, no shower stalls, too many people, whatever. Wichita couldn't blame them, really, for being so finicky. You grow up a certain way, get used to things being done a certain way-- a comfortable way-- and any alternative seems like some kind of big upheaval. So, they whined about it, made proposals for sonic showers and other bizarre science fiction solutions, made an effort to avoid their neighbors by hitting the bathhouse early in the morning or late at night...
Wichita, on the other hand, had no fucks to give. When the planet turns to shit overnight and becomes, almost literally, a dog-eat-dog world, you learn to stop being so picky about certain things. Hell, for Wichita, seeing the bathhouse for the first time was like finding an oasis in the desert. She didn't care how many people were there, all she cared about was getting that shower that had eluded her for what felt like weeks. Fuck modesty.
When she emerged from the bathhouse for the first time, it felt almost like the accumulated grime of Zombieland had been washed away. Hair damp, soaking into her t-shit, she stopped outside and surveyed the settlement before her. It was small, had a ways to go before it could really be called a town. But even still, as she watched the people go to and from their destinations, it hit her: she was back in civilization again.
And what was the first-- no, second-- thing she was going to do now that she was free from the flesh eating freaks that were once her peers and neighbors? She was getting shitfaced.
She found her way to the saloon easily-- it wasn't hard when there were only like five buildings to choose from-- and it was minutes before she got her first cold beer since the apocalypse started. As she drank her beer, she considered her new situation and tried to come up with a game plan. First things first: she couldn't forget her rules (yeah, Columbus would be proud). Rule number one? People suck. Don't get attached.
First-Person Sample: So, this is the meet and greet part? Okay. I don't have a speech prepared, so. I'm just gonna wing it. Hi-- it's "hi" around here, right? [Wryly:] Or should I say "howdy?"
Anyway, my name's Wichita, from the United States of Zombieland. [A beat.] Nice place you got here. I mean, the barracks are a big step down from Bill Murray's place. But the saloon's pretty cool-- definitely has the old west vibe going for it. [She shrugs.] Honestly, it's just nice to be anywhere where I don't have to worry about flesh eating freaks trying to eat me.
